WAIGURU NA NYORO WAMTOROKA RAILA

Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has retracted sentiments that she was in support of a Raila Odinga presidency.

Addressing journalists after a two-day retreat at Laikipia County, the Kirinyaga County boss said the ongoing consultations were not definite and that Mt Kenya will settle for a leader who will take care of the region’s interests.

“There has been speculation that we are leaning towards Raila Odinga that is not true. In fact, what we are doing is consultations so whoever we think will articulate our issues is the one we will back,” Waiguru said.

Waiguru’s statement comes after the Court of Appeal backed the High Court’s decision that rendered the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) null and void.

After the Court of Appeal’s decision on BBI, which was birthed by the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila, Waiguru sent a message to her supporters which pundits say indicate a change of tact in her political stance.

“Kenya will go on. BBI intended well but we must respect the constitutional authority of the courts and find other legitimate means to achieve Kenya’s unity and prosperity. And for some of us, it’s time for serious introspection on the political way forward,” Waiguru said in a tweet.

Waiguru further re-stated her stand to the Mt Kenya region, claiming that the ongoing political dalliance and meetings are aimed at identifying the leader who will advance the interests of the mountain.

“Many of residents think we are divided on account that we are talking to these people who are seeking the top seat. You will see meetings of that kind since we are open to all,” Waiguru said.

However, on Tuesday, August 17, Waiguru joined Raila in Nakuru where the ODM party leader addressed residents in a campaign geared towards a United Kenya.

“It’s time for a United and Inclusive Kenya! Kenyans regardless of tribe, gender, age or economic stature deserve to live in peace and with equal opportunities. I was honoured to witness as Rt Hon Raila Odinga launch the political journey towards a United Kenya,” Waiguru said in an August 17 tweet.

On the other hand, Kiambu governor James Nyoro, who flanked Waiguru during the press address, said Mt Kenya is keen on endorsing a leader who will advance its interests after the retirement of President Uhuru.

“Most of our people are suffering after being embargoed by CRB if you look at papers of those people listed majority are from the central region with some being auctioned. This must be addressed,” Nyoro argued.
