MCA Beaten Badly By Police Officer in Broad Daylight

Interior and Government Coordination Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has condemned the violence meted out against Mlango Kubwa MCA Patricia Mutheu on Tuesday and other members of the public by police officers.

Matiang’i has also ordered that everyone at the Nairobi County Assembly be disarmed immediately and all their licences withdrawn. Matiang’i has also said that so far, 14 firearms have been recovered from the chambers from various persons including security officers.

He further says his ministry is in consultation with the National Security Council over the chaos witnessed at the assembly leading to the beating up of Ms Mutheu by police officers in the precincts of the chambers.

Several MCAs had stormed the chambers to serve Speaker Beatrice Elachi with notice of an impeachment motion against her a move that met with resistance from police officers who were manning Elachi’s offices.

Mutheu was injured in the melee that ensued and is receiving treatment at a Nairobi Hospital. Four police officers were caught on camera clobbering her leading to an outcry demanding that they be brought to book for assaulting her. So far, several leaders including Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Woman Rep Esther Passaris have visited her in hospital and condemned the incident.
