MUSEVENI FAMILY BREAKS SILENCE AFTER HIS DEATH REPORTS

Family of President Yoweri Museveni has broken the silence after it emerged a rumor of President Museveni being admitted in critical condition.

Taking to his official pages, his son also a senior army officer Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said his father was responding well to medication and wished him a quick recovery.

This is after social media was awash with reports that the long-serving head of State was no more after being admitted in the Intensive Care Unit ICU.

Museveni fell ill with signs of Coronavirus what he(Museveni) confirmed saying he had been forced to discharge his official duties from home.

The ailing Museveni then stated that all the NRM cadres and followers should continue to understand the importance of robust health.

President Museveni has been the long-serving head of State Uganda having taken over the reins in the year 1986.

He held posts in transitional governments upto 1980 before running for presidency of Uganda. When the elections, widely believed to have been rigged, were won by Milton Obote.

Museveni and former president Yusufu Lule then decided to form the National Resistance Movement (NRM) which he led the National Resistance Army NRA that waged a guerrilla war against Obote’s regime. The resistance eventually prevailed, and on January 26, 1986, Mr. Museveni declared himself president of Uganda.

He was elected to the post on May 9, 1996, and his backers won control of the National Assembly in legislative elections held the following month. Museveni was reelected in 2001 and again in 2006 after a Constitutional amendment passed the previous year eliminated established term limits for the presidency.

He was reelected again in 2011 and 2016, although the opposition and international observers noted problems with the polling process in both elections.

A Constitutional amendment passed in 2017 removed the age limit for presidential candidates that had been set at age 75 while also reimposing a limit of two terms, clearing the way for an aging Museveni to stand for the next two presidential elections. He was reelected in 2021, but the campaign period prior to the polls was criticised as being repressive.

So far his son, Muhhzi Kainerugaba, who is a senior army general, is positioning himself to succeed the father.Monday, June 12, 2023
