Migori Deputy Governor is Dead

Migori County Deputy Governor Nelson Mahanga Mwita passed away on Saturday, September 9.

In a statement, Governor Ochillo Ayacko mourned his late deputy as a great leader while affirming that his constituents are grateful and will remember him for his service.

“I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. My deepest empathy,” Governor Ayacko said in the statement.

Separately, the County Government of Migori mourned Mahanga as a devout leader who gave his best for the betterment of society.

“With great commiseration, we register our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and the people of Migori for having lost such a useful leader,” read part of a statement published by the devolved unit.

According to reports, the former politician passed on while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

Following his death, the deceased’s body was transferred to the morgue. The family is currently making funeral arrangements and is expected to communicate the plans to Migori residents and Kenyans at large in due course.

Mahanga was Migori’s first Deputy Governor elected under the new constitution on a joint ticket with former Governor Okoth Obado.

In 2020, he took over some county functions after the High Court blocked Obado from accessing his office.

“I would like to tell Migori residents and Kenyans that we do not have a power vacuum in Migori. The county will continue to function well and we have robust county executive committee meetings,” Mahanga stated.

At the time, Obado was facing impeachment with several graft cases hanging over his head.

The deceased was a respected banker and marketer who kept a low profile until Obado’s court cases surfaced.

He held a Degree in Lands Economics from the University of Nairobi, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from USIU, and a Degree in Banking from the London Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Before entering politics, he served as a lecturer and worked in various roles within local banks.
