Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to lead a team of African Observers in the forthcoming General elections in Nigeria.

A communique from the AU appointed Uhuru as the team leader of the 90-member from various AU member states.

Nigeria is set to hold its general elections on February 25, 2023.

“The African Union Commission(AUC) announces the launch of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM). The AUEOM will be led by His Excellency Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, former President of the Republic of Kenya,” the AU statement reads in part.

The team of observers will comprise representatives of election management bodies, civil society organisations, independent experts, women and youths as well as AU organs.

The observers will be tasked with providing an impartial and accurate assessment of the electoral processes including the degree to which the conduct of elections meets regional, continental and international standards.

They will also offer recommendations for the improvement of future elections based on the findings as well as demonstrate AU’s solidarity and support towards consolidation of democracy, peace, stability and development in Nigeria.

The AUEOM will engage with various stakeholders as well as observe the polling process.

They will issue a press statement on February 27 based on the findings of the election processes.
