What Machogu Announced About KCSE Results that Has Shocked Many

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has officially released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

Speaking at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret on Monday, CS Machogu said that there has been a notable overall improvement in the student’s performance from the 2022 cohort.

CS Machogu stated that out of the 899,453 candidates, 450,554 were male while 448,899 were female.

Of the students, 1,216 managed to score an A grade compared to 1,146 in 2022.

In school-level distributions, Machogu said that 899 candidates were from National schools followed by extra-county schools with 172, private schools with 143, 5 from County schools and 7 from Sub-County schools.

Machogu added that a total of 201,133 students attained a C+ and above which is the minimum university entry qualification. This was also an improvement from 2022 which saw 173,345 attain the same grade.

Machogu attributed the rise to the changed grading system implemented in the examination.

Those candidates who scored D+ and above were 526,222 compared to 522,588 in 2022.

There was however a huge number of candidates who scored an E recorded at 48,174 to which Machogu called for an immediate probe to ascertain the unsettling numbers.

“I order the directorate of quality assurance to work with field officers and teachers to investigate these E Grade cases in each county of the country and submit a report to me within one month for further action,” he said.

Further, a total of 4,113 candidates were reported to have been involved in exam irregularities. Of these four candidates have had their results cancelled following impersonation reports.

For the remaining 4,109 candidates, their results will remain withheld pending the completion of investigations and will know their fate in 20 days.

Candidates can now access their results through the KNEC website or directly through the URL: https://results.knec.ac.ke. 

The website was however unresponsive at the time of this publication.

One will be required to enter the candidate’s index number and the name(s) as per their registration data for the 2023 KCSE examination.
