SHOCK AS MPS PRADO CATCHES FIRE DURING CAMPAIGN RALLY
A car belonging to Elgeyo Marakwet Woman Representative Jane Chebaibai on Monday, March 21, went up in flames at Kaptarakwa, Keyio town.
An eyewitness who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke revealed that the vehicle was part of Chebaibai’s convoy and hosted the public address (PA) system. He explained that the car went up in flames after the generator developed mechanical problems.
He noted that fire started following an oil leak, which came into contact with sparks caused by friction between the parts of the generator as the vehicle moved along the rough road.
“The vehicle was part of the Woman Rep’s convoy and contained a generator used to power the PA system. There was an oil leakage which may have come into contact with sparks, resulting in the breakout,” the source revealed.
Notably, the Woman Rep was not in the car when the incident happened. All the three occupants in the vehicle managed to escape unhurt.
“The MP is safe, she was in another vehicle. As for the three occupants in the vehicle, they managed to disembark from the vehicle in good time,” he added.
The incident comes barely two months after the vehicle of yet another MP went up in flames in a similar fashion.
On January 22, one of the campaign vehicles belonging to Soy legislator, Caleb Kositany was partially burnt down. Kositany explained that the cause of the fire was a faulty generator.
“My public address vehicle caught fire today, due to a faulty generator. Everybody is safe, thanks to the Eldoret airport fire brigade and Uasin Gishu County fire department. We thank God,” the MP clarified.
Prior to his clarification, word was already going round on the cause of the fire with some members of the public claiming that the car was torched by goons for campaigning in his political rival’s turf.
In a separate incident in November 2021, a pick-up truck belonging to Endebess lawmaker Robert Pukose also burst into flames shortly after being parked by his driver.
Officers from the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) in Trans Nzoia launched a probe into the suspicious incident which occurred a few meters away from the lawmaker’s home.
