CHEBUKATI FINALLY REVEALS WHO FORCED HIM TO MODERATE RESULTS
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has written to President William Ruto requesting the formation of an investigation commission in order to determine the extent of state meddling before the results of the presidential election in August 2022 are announced.
The outgoing IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati, claimed that state agencies were attempting to’moderate’ the results, putting the commission’s independence in jeopardy.
He singled out the National Security Council as an organization that allegedly attempted to sway election results and thus undermine popular will.
The commissioners, employees, and they all received threats, intimidation, profiling, attacks, and assaults, according to the chairman.
Chebukati asserted that state intervention will likely recur in the future if it is not subdued, necessitating the opening of the investigation.
High ethnic and tribal elections in Kenya, the late passage of election legislation, and inconsistent funding, according to Chebukati, were the main difficulties he and his commissioners faced.
The departing chairman, who has completed his six-year constitutional term in office, expressed satisfaction with the work he accomplished while leading the commission.
He spoke on January 16 at the Safari Park hotel during the presentation of the 2022 Post-Election Evaluation Report.
