5 Dead After Tragic Accident at Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

Families are mourning their loved ones after a bus collided with a truck on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the morning hours of Wednesday.  

Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander Maina confirmed to the press on Thursday that the crash occurred between the towns of Machinery and Kambu in Makueni along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Five people died in the accident while several others who were injured were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The incident is said to have happened in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Photos from the crash showed that the bus, a public service vehicle, was badly damaged while the trailer was overturned at the accident scene.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established.

The incident comes a day after another public service vehicle was involved in an accident at a roundabout at the intersection of Haile Selassie Avenue and Uhuru Highway in Nairobi.

According to St John Ambulance, five passengers were seriously injured while one was in critical condition.

“Five passengers have been seriously injured with one in critical condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon at the Haile Selassie/Uhuru Highway roundabout, Nairobi,” read the statement in part.

“Our paramedics have evacuated the injured to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Fatalities arising from accidents on Kenyan roads have continued to rise with data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicating that at least 21,760 people were involved in road accidents last year.

That was an increase of 1,135 compared to 2021, where 20,625 people were involved in road crashes.

This year alone, NTSA records show that 2,124 people lost their lives in road carnages between January and June this year.

Incompetent and unfit drivers were blamed for the increase in fatalities, mostly pedestrians at 571 followed by motorcycle operators with 449 casualties.
