LOCKDOWN LOOMING?

Kenyans are worried whether the government will set new measures to help curb the spread of Covid-19. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe is set to address the country today (Friday, July 30) over the new COVID-19 containment measures.

Kagwe’s address comes just a day after the lapse of the 60th day 10 PM-4 AM curfew that was imposed in May.

However, Kenyans have little hope that the government will remove all the COVID-19 restrictions as the positivity rate has gone up in recent days.

On Thursday, Kenya had a positivity rate of 14.4% after recording 1,068 Covid-19 cases from 7,398 samples.

The numbers were even higher the previous day, where Kenya recorded 1,006 new cases, putting the positivity rate at 18%.

Kagwe warned that the deadlier Delta virus is the reason for the high numbers being reported in the country.

Already, a school in Nyeri county was closed just two days after reopening as more than 100 students tested positive for the virus.

Health experts want the government to declare a 4th wave, and enforce tough containment measures, including a possible lockdown in some parts.

Unlike normal COVID-19 updates which happen at Afya House, today’s press conference will be held at Harambee House.
