RAILA WORRIED AFTER SUPREME COURT DECLARED CHEBUKATI & RUTO WINNERS
The confusion sparked by the split in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) may not feature at the Supreme Court.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati-led faction on one side and his Vice-chair Juliana Cherara on the other had separately contracted lawyers to represent them in the presidential election petitions lodged by Azimio leader Raila Odinga and several other parties.
Both camps had fronted their lawyers on behalf of IEBC.
However, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu ruled that the court will only recognise lawyers hired by Chebukati as the IEBC counsels.
Chebukati is being represented by former Attorney General Githu Muigai while the Cherara group had hired Paul Muite.
However, Mwilu clarified that Cherara and commissioners Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi can still retain their lawyers in the case, but not on behalf of IEBC.
