Good News as Govt Reduces NHIF Payment
The Kenyan government, represented by Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha of the Ministry of Health, unveiled a crucial update on contributions to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
As of today, December 31, 2023, Kenyan citizens are mandated to make a minimum monthly contribution of KSh 300 to the NHIF, as officially declared by the government.
Highlighting its commitment to accessible healthcare, the Kenyan government emphasized that health services at level two and three hospitals across the nation will be provided at no cost to citizens residing within its borders. This move aligns with the government’s efforts to ensure healthcare affordability and inclusivity.
Susan Nakhumicha, the cabinet secretary for health, expressed the government’s broader healthcare coverage strategy, stating, “The primary healthcare fund will cover levels 2 and 3 at no cost.
We have the Social Health Insurance Fund, which is available up to level 4. With a 300 KES minimum payment, we are creating regulations.” This announcement signifies a comprehensive approach to healthcare accessibility, encompassing various levels of medical services.
Moreover, Nakhumicha clarified that the minimum monthly contribution is a step towards implementing structured regulations for healthcare financing.
This move is expected to enhance the sustainability of the NHIF and contribute to the overall improvement of the healthcare system in Kenya.
It’s important to note that the government’s decision to set a minimum contribution comes as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline and strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
The specified amount aims to strike a balance between ensuring financial support for the NHIF and preventing an undue burden on citizens.
