DP RUTO DOESN’T WANT TO BE PRESIDENT ANYMORE?

Kenyan deputy president, William Samoei Ruto does not want to be president anymore. Political analyst, Herman Manyora, has opined that Deputy President William Ruto is no longer interested in becoming the fifth President of Kenya.

According to Manyora, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Nairobi (UoN), the DP has realised that his chances of winning the August 9 election are slim.

As such, Ruto has moved with speed and opted to create a strong party that will frustrate whoever wins the election through the National Assembly.

He explained that Ruto is not ready to work with smaller parties because he wants to have one big party that will control Parliament.

“Ruto knows he will not be president in 2022. Ruto is not gunning for the presidency in 2022. He is an intelligent politician who has looked around and realised that the 2022 elections will not go in his favour.

“The DP is building a strong party. He wants to control the Senate, National Assembly, and County Assemblies by way of quantity and quality,” Manyora opined.

Further, he argued that Ruto was aware of the enormity of the forthcoming election and if Raila wins, he may embark on destroying the DP’s political career.

Manyora revealed that if Raila succeeds President Uhuru Kenyatta, he may seek to amend the Constitution and the only way Ruto can protect himself is by controlling Parliament.

The UoN don added that after winning the election, Raila is likely to revive the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and Ruto will scuttle it because of the numbers he will have garnered in Parliament.

“Ruto will have to have a force in Parliament that will scuttle any legislative attempt by Uhuru and Raila to create an infrastructure through BBI that will enable them to remain in power for 20 to 30 years and implement their schemes,” he observed.

He, however, argued that the civil societies and Judiciary are always keen on ensuring that constitutional changes follow laid-down processes.

This was one of the major hurdles Uhuru and Raila faced when they championed for BBI. The initiative was declared null and void by the High Court and the Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court will listen to appeals filed by the pro-BBI team from January 18 – 20.
