Constituencies Now to Be Reduced
Former Attorney General Githu Muigai on Thursday appeared before the National Delegates Committee (NDCO) where he recommended the reduction of counties and constituencies.
While addressing the panel, the former AG asked for the reduction to save taxpayers the cost of running many electoral units.“My personal view is that we have too many people in parliament and too many constituencies.
We should be reducing the number of constituencies and counties, they are costing us a lot of money and some of them are not viable,” the lawyer noted.
IEBC last week made their submissions before the NDC, in their submission, the independent body called on the committee to recommend the position of the IEBC chairperson be replaced by an expert in legal matters.
Githu also noted that he has no problem with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s role in the government.
“I have no problem with the Prime Cabinet Secretary post, I think it is a way of organizing a cabinet, the committee sittings are very difficult to coordinate, the president is busy and the deputy president is busily deputizing him,” Githu remarked.
Githu clarified the role of the Judiciary in handling electoral cases, advising that the courts, specifically the Supreme Court stop giving verdicts that sound the same in every electoral cycle making them predictable.
Also in his submission, Githu recommended a committee to grill IEBC appointees before approval.
