CHEBUKATI ANNOUNCES ELECTION POSTPONEMENT

Electoral body Chairman Wafula Chebukati has predicted postponement of elections following a series of court cases against the IEBC.

The Commission chair said the ongoing court cases which are yet to be concluded and no signs of being determined soon could see some areas miss the August 9 elections.

He added that it is hard to go on with the smooth printing of ballot materials when there are cases being filed every day against the process.

“If for any reason they (court cases) are not finalised in good time, as a commission we cannot wait forever, we shall be forced to suspend elections in those areas where decisions affect the printing of ballot papers. We must deliver elections on August 9,” he said.

He therefore challenged the courts to look into the matter as fast as possible so that his agency can go on with the process of holding credible, free and fair polls.

He made the revelations on Saturday July 9 during the Political Decency and Accountability Forum 2022 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The country only has four weeks remaining to general elections.
