Last Words of Dead Athlete Kiplagat Shocks Many

Kenyan-born athlete Benjamin Kiplagat met a tragic end on Sunday as he was found dead along the road in Kimumu. Police in Eldoret have now shed light on the final moments of the acclaimed athlete.

According to Moiben Sub-County Police Commandant Stephen Okal, Kiplagat was heading home in the early hours of Sunday morning when his black Toyota Hilux was intercepted by a motorcycle, blocking his route.

Subsequently, Kiplagat collided with the motorcycle, and the riders, suspected to be assailants, abandoned the scene, leaving the motorcycle behind.

The police were alerted to an accident involving a vehicle and a motorcycle around 5:00 am in the Kimumu area. Upon arrival, they discovered Kiplagat’s lifeless body in the driver’s seat, revealing multiple stab wounds on his chest and neck.

Born in Elgeyo Marakwet, Kiplagat had changed his nationality to Uganda, representing the country in global competitions, particularly excelling in the men’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase event. In December, he was diligently preparing for upcoming athletics events scheduled for 2024 while training in Iten.

In the wake of this tragic incident, Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Sports in Uganda, extended heartfelt condolences to Kiplagat’s family and the broader East African community.

World Athletics also expressed shock and sadness at the untimely passing of the athlete, sending condolences to his friends, family, teammates, and fellow athletes.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection to Kiplagat’s murder, shedding light on the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
