Jalango Speaks of Resigning as Langata MP
Langata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has finally broken his silence on the rumours that he is planning to resign from his seat after a major fallout with the Azimio coalition.
The comedian-turned-politician, who was elected on an ODM party ticket, had recently met with President William Ruto, sparking speculation that he was defecting to the UDA camp
However, in an exclusive interview with Radio 47, Jalang’o dismissed the claims that he was quitting his position, saying that there was no legal mechanism to conduct a by-election at the moment. He said that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was not fully constituted and that the next general election was only a few months away.
“There is no IEBC to conduct elections so why would I resign and maybe the team will be formed in 2026?” he posed.
The youthful Jalang’o also insisted that he did not do anything wrong in meeting Ruto, and that resigning would be a validation of his ‘wrongdoings’. He said that he was only seeking development for his constituency and that he had not abandoned his loyalty to ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“I met Ruto as a friend and as a leader who has a vision for this country. I did not betray Baba (Raila) or Azimio. I am still a member of ODM and I support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Resigning would mean that I have something to hide or that I have been bought,” he said.
Jalang’o also revealed that he had spoken to Raila after the meeting and that they had cleared the air. He said that Raila understood his position and that he had no hard feelings towards him. He urged his supporters to remain calm and assured them that he would continue to serve them diligently.
“I have a good relationship with Baba and he knows that I am his son. He told me to focus on my work and not to be distracted by the noise. He also said that he would visit Langata soon and launch some projects that we have been working on,” he said.
