Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga says that President Uhuru Kenyatta will be an “advisor” in his government should he clinch the presidency August.
Mr. Odinga, in a Tuesday interview with BBC’s Sophie Ikenye, said that Mr. Kenyatta will be a go-to person for consultation, adding that the President also consults him.
“He will help me with advice. I shall be consulting him just as he consults me now,” said Mr. Odinga.
The former Prime Minister further stated that there is a pool of options for President Kenyatta in his government, including “business and diplomatic matters”.
“He can handle business and also diplomatic matters, the way I serve at the African Union, and many more. There are many capacities President Kenyatta can serve in,” he added.
While hailing President Kenyatta’s legacy, Odinga said that his government will take from the infrastructure projects Kenyatta will leave and expand them further.
“Uhuru Kenyatta has done a lot infrastructure-wise, but all that is like water in the ocean, we will continue to expand the road and electricity network across the country to boost the economy,” Odinga said.
The ODM chief further dismissed his critics who have labeled him a “puppet of the outgoing president”, saying his union with Kenyatta through the March 2018 handshake was for peace and not personal interests.
“Raila Odinga cannot be anyone’s puppet. I have worked with President Kenyatta when I was Prime Minister. He was my deputy and we did a good job,” he said.
Added Odinga: “When we had differences and took oaths as presidents, the country was in chaos and almost disintegrating and that is why we decided to come together because the country is more important than any of us.”
President Kenyatta has endorsed Odinga as his preferred successor.
During the Azimio La Umoja’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday, March 12, the Head of State told the delegates that he believes Odinga has the right leadership tools to elevate Kenya into a booming state.
