LIST OF MOST EDUCATED PEOPLE IN KENYA

The academic credentials of Kenyan politicians have become the subject of close public scrutiny ostensibly due to the now strict electoral regulations. Many politicians especially Members of the County Assemblies are perceived to be school dropouts or form four leavers.

The past 5 or so years have seen many politicians go back to universities to see for better academic qualifications. While some like DP Dr. William Ruto were seen qualifying, there are others like Mithika Linturi, former Governor Baba Yao, Ali Korane who have been accused of acquiring their new papers dubiously.

Here is a list of the top 10 most Educated politicians in Kenya.

1. Prof Kivutha Kibwana

The grey-haired Makueni Governor holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi. He also holds Masters of Law degrees, one from the University of London and another from Harvard.

He recently graduated with a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Africa International University. He has written numerous papers in various journals and books. He was a lecturer for many years and former President Mwai Kibaki’s Advisor.

2. Professor Anyang Nyong’o

Nyong’o studied for his undergraduate course at Makerere University in Uganda where he was awarded a 1st Class Honours Degree in Political science. He furthered his studies at the University of Chicago and obtained a Master’s and a Ph.D. in political science. He has worked as a professor of political science at the UON and as a visiting professor in various Universities in Mexico and Addis Ababa until 1987 before becoming the head of programs at the African Academy of sciences. He is the current Kisumu county Governor.

3. Dr. William Ruto

The deputy president attended Kapsabet High school in Nandi County for his A-Levels after which he was admitted to the University of Nairobi to study Botany bad Zoology for his Bachelor of Science degree.

He graduated top of his class at the university and was offered a scholarship to take up post-graduate studies at the college. He commenced his work for Master of Science in 1991 but deferred his research in 1992 when he was employed by the Kenya African National Union in their successful presidential re-election campaign.

In 2008, he graduated with a Masters of Science in Plant Ecology. He enrolled for Ph.D. at the University of Nairobi and I currently undertaking his thesis research under the supervision of Prof(s) J. Kinyamario and E. Akunda both of the School of Biological Sciences in the UON.

In 2018, Dr. Ruto graduated with a doctorate in Biological science thus earning the title Doctor Dr.

4. Professor Paul Chepkwony.

He is the former Governor of Kericho county. Mr. Chepkwony went to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) for his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. He acquired a Master in Chemistry at the UON. He was previously a senior lecturer and Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Moi University Chepkoilel Campus now the University of Eldoret.

5. Professor Kithure Kindiki

Kithara is the current Senator of Tharaka Nithi County. He pursued a law degree at Moi University and a Master and a Ph.D. in Law at the University of Pretoria. He briefly taught in various Universities before joining the Advocate’s bar and started a legal career.

Before joining politics, Prof Kithure worked as a political commentator. He is a renowned scholar.

6. Professor Helena Sambili

Prof Sambili holds a BEd (Science) degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master’s and Ph.D. in Education from Lancaster University in the UK.

She is a former teacher of Moi High school in kabarak and a former Lecturer and Associate Professor at Everyone University where he worked in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Professor Sambili also served as Minister for Higher Education, Science, and Technology from October 2010 to August 2011.
